How We Arrived to the Offshore Energy Generation System (OEGS) Solution
After many years of having the opportunity to successfully deliver global mega projects in the oil and gas industry, developing new technologies, and earning world records and global awards, We decided to use the lessons learned from Investments, Project Development, Project Management, and Engineering to apply them in what was deemed the biggest challenges facing humanity.
The Investment Idea.
As Jeff Bezos, Amazon and Blue Origin - Newslines investing in what is not going to change will still pay off many years from today, this is more important than investing in what is trending now. Jeff Bezos says that when "something is known to be true, even over a long time, more energy can be put into it". Amazon has focused for many years on maintaining low prices, fast delivery, and a big selection, "Customers are not going to come back and request higher prices, or slower delivery". This simple idea has worked quite well for Mr Bezos as He became the richest man in the world. But it is even more interesting when you compare the investment idea from another richest man in the world Warren Edward Buffett who has been saying for a long time “You should invest in a business that even a fool can run because someday a fool will.” Based on the same idea we decided to invest in something that customers will not change over the time and that will work no matter what, using physics to make the work.
Figure 2 - What most consumers will always want
Focusing on the consumers we found at that time that if we should focus our investment in the intersection of the Low Price of Energy, Zero CO2e emissions, and not in anybody's backyard.
The Climate Challenge
The 2015 UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) concluded with 196 parties adopting the climate challenge. To resolve this challenge it will be necessary to increase our worldwide energy supply to about 50% more than was being produced; and at the same time execute a major decarbonization of entire economies worldwide to reduce the carbon emission to the atmosphere to levels that ensure a secure environment. This requires the rapid development of a solution that could be deployed to scale before 2050.
The Engineering Question.
Then from the engineering perspective, we all know the laws of nature never change. All humans on earth including all our ancestors and descendants will have to deal with the same gravity acceleration of 9.81 m/s2 no matter what.
So we took a comprehensive and systematic engineering approach to evaluating all possible energy sources and concluded that the solution could be Nuclear. However, we found that Nuclear has also some challenges and We decided to resolve those challenges; and realized that most of the challenges were not inherent in the nuclear technology itself but more in the project management engineering and construction of these projects.
We interviewed many people working on nuclear projects, I went back to school to study sustainable energy and then I when back again to study nuclear sciences and compared the problems in the Nuclear industry with the problems we had faced in the development of deep water and ultra-deepwater projects in the oil and gas industry. The main difference was We had a lot more access to capital which enabled the global offshore industry to learn from its mistakes and optimize the use of capital and risk reduction.
Inherent Safety.
Then from the capital value process, we typically phase the projects as shown in Figure 1 - The Inherent Safety Solution is the best use of capital. This has enabled the Oil and Gas Industry to reduce the cost and schedule risks but more importantly to reduce the safety risks. In the early phases of the projects, we focus on eliminating the major hazards, as this translates into risk reduction and cost. When we apply this systematic analysis we reduce the risk of nuclear going offshore and then with advanced nuclear designs, we certainly can have inherent safe designs that will satisfy what most customers always want as shown in Figure 2. We developed multiple in-depth analyses for many years that were kept confidential until now when We have decided to go more public about some of this but maintain the confidentiality required by the investors.
